Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a country in western South America. It is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and the Pacific Ocean. Peru is a megadiverse country, with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west, to the peaks of the Andes mountains extending from the north to the southeast of the country, to the tropical Amazon basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon River. Peru has a population of over 32 million, and its capital and largest city is Lima. At 1,285,216 km2 (496,225 sq mi), Peru is the 19th largest country in the world, and the third largest in South America.
What a better way to make the most of your visit to this Wonder of the World than combining it with the astounding Sacred Valley. This valley is home of some the most important archeological sites, striking colonial towns, handicrafts markets and native, old Inca citadels. This is the perfect introduction to the wonders of Aguas Calientes town and the masterpiece of architecture, urbanism, art and engineering of the Inca Civilization: Machu Picchu.
The Amazon River gives the Peruvian rainforest its name – Peruvian Amazonia, informally known locally as the Peruvian jungle or just the jungle. This area of the Amazon rainforest in Peru extends east of the Andes and Peru's borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia. This region comprises 60% of the country. Peru has the second-largest portion of the Amazon rainforest. The biodiversity is awe-inspiring, boasting an estimated 16,000 species of plants, 2,000 species of birds, 700 species of fish, and countless other mammals, reptiles, and insects. From the majestic jaguar and elusive giant river otter to colorful macaws and mischievous monkeys, the Peruvian Amazon is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Paracas is a pacific beach town famed for its scenic coastline and wildlife. It's become an increasingly popular foodie destination where you can sample ceviche and other Peruvian cuisine. Home to one of the biggest protected deserts in the Americas, Paracas National Reserve, it's incredible views of desert meeting the ocean are a must see. The Ballestas Islands, also known as Peru's Galapagos, is located off the coast of Paracas. This "Mini-Galapagos" is the natural habitat to hundreds of penguins and sea lions.
The town of Huacachina is an idyllic natural oasis in the middle of the desert. It is South America's only desert oasis. Huacachina has what is considered one of the most beautiful sunsets in Peru, right on top of the incredible sand dunes that overlook the natural oasis.
Built around mid 15th century, Machu Picchu is one of the most famous archeological sites on the planet. Located at the highs of the Andes mountains, the engineering marvel holds high cultural significance in the country. A perfect example of Inca civilization engineering skills, the structure is made with exceptional cut stones which stood earthquakes for more than 500 years. The archeological mystery is the top tourist destination to date.
Once hidden inside dense vegetation and Andean mountains in Cusco, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is without a doubt South America’s top destination. Visited by millions of locals and travelers alike every year, it’s mysterious and mystical aura that flows through the ruins are felt nowhere else. The “lost” city of the Incas is a must for anyone traveling to Peru. The jaw-dropping Machu Picchu will give you an unforgettable memory and leave you even more curious about the Inca Empire.
